Smith was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1884. She attended the School of Design for Women (which is now Moore College of Art & Design), and later studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins in Philadelphia, graduating in 1888. A year later, she started working in the production department of the Ladies' Home Journal. She left to take classes under Howard Pyle, first at Drexel and then at the Brandywine School. She was a prolific contributor to books and magazines during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, illustrating stories and articles for clients such as Century, Collier's Weekly, Leslie's Weekly, Harper's, McClure's, Scribners, and the Ladies' Home Journal. Smith may be most well known for her covers on Good Housekeeping. Smith also painted posters and portraits. Her twelve illustrations for Charles Kingsley's The Water-Babies (1916) are well known. The Hall of Fame of the Society of Illustrators has inducted only 10 women since its inception in 1958. Smith was a renowned artist of American life. The popular American myth of Santa Claus arrived in England in the 1850s and Father Christmas started to take on Santa's attributes. By the 1880s the new customs had become established, with the nocturnal visitor sometimes being known as Santa Claus and sometimes as Father Christmas. He was often illustrated wearing a long red hooded gown trimmed with white fur.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1003/2254/products/01a12x14SantaPaintingToyBoat_8ee94012-da9f-4c4c-a7a6-8e12616e0926.jpg?v=1546352626
santa-claus-and-a-baby-frances-brundage-holiday-christmas-counted-cross-stitch-or-counted-needlepoint-pattern
Santa Claus and a Baby Frances Brundage Holiday Christmas Counted Cross Stitch Pattern

Charted for 14 count fabric. Christmas or Christmas Day, Old English: Cr?stesm??¬sse, meaning "Christ's Mass" is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed most commonly on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. Frances Isabelle (Lockwood) Brundage (1854-1937) was an American illustrator best known for her depictions of attractive and endearing children on postcards, valentines, calendars, and other ephemera published by Raphael Tuck & Sons, Samuel Gabriel Company, and Saalfield Publishing. She received an education in art at an early age from her father, Rembrandt Lockwood. Her professional career in illustration began at seventeen when her father abandoned his family and she was forced to seek a livelihood. In addition to ephemera, Brundage illustrated children's classics such as the novels of Louisa May Alcott, Johanna Spyri, and Robert Louis Stevenson, and traditional literary collections such as The Arabian Nights and the stories of King Arthur and Robin Hood. She was a prolific artist, and, in her late 60s, was producing as many as twenty books annually.

father-christmas-and-elves-sledding-holiday-christmas-by-rudolf-koivu-counted-cross-stitch-or-counted-needlepoint-pattern
Father Christmas and Elves Sledding Holiday Christmas by Rudolf Koivu Counted Cross Stitch Pattern

COUNTED CROSS STITCH PATTERN Charted for 14 count fabric and DMC Cotton Floss. In the process of creating and marketing this huge output of merchandise for the nation's five-and-dimes, department stores, variety shops, and other retail outlets, Whitney introduced a line of Nimble Nicks products. The Nimble Nicks were Santa's helpers. The Nimble Nicks - cute little guys who loved a good time almost as much as they loved helping Santa make toys and get ready for his once-a-year Christmas Eve trip - were American originals. On postcards and other paper goods and in storybooks, they were probably introduced about 1915 and stayed around until the early 1920s. Many Nimble Nicks souvenir postcards - at least two dozen of them - were printed, each in runs of tens to hundreds of thousands of copies. Countless other merchandise, including easel stand-ups, were also produced, as well as illustrated books.

https://www.orencooriginals.net/collections/santa-father-christmas-saint-nick-counted-cross-stitch-patterns.oembed?page=7
